FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) _ Sam Darnold is keeping his No. 14 with the New York Jets.

Almost immediately after the former USC quarterback was drafted with the No. 3 overall pick last Thursday night, many Jets fans took to social media clamoring for the team to announce what jersey number Darnold would wear to start his NFL career.

New York made it official on Tuesday with a post on Twitter _ giving fans the green light to go order their green-and-white No. 14 Jets jerseys.

Wide receiver Andre Roberts, signed this offseason as a free agent, had been listed on the Jets' roster as No. 14 _ and it remained that way as of Tuesday night. It's unclear what number Roberts will wear.

Some crafty fans might be able to make use of their old Ryan Fitzpatrick jerseys, who wore No. 14 with the Jets during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Eight other players have worn the number during their Jets careers, including: Richard Todd (1976-83), Tom O'Connor (1987), Troy Taylor (1990), Glenn Foley (1994), Neil O'Donnell (1996-97), Greg McElroy (2012), Chris Owusu (2014) and Jeremy Kerley (2017).
