Saints preseason opener brings big snaps for center hopefuls

Saints coach Sean Payton stopped short of declaring top draft choice McCoy the starting center in the preseason opener. Yet, if recent practices are any indication, the 6-foot-4, 315-pound rookie out of Texas A&M has as good a chance as anyone to open the season snapping the ball to 40-year-old, record-setting quarterback Drew Brees. FILE - In this March 1, 2019, file photo, Texas A&M offensive lineman Erik McCoy runs a drill during the NFL football scouting combine, in Indianapolis. New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton isn’t ready to announce who’ll be snapping the ball to record-setting quarterback Drew Brees this season. But the Saints’ preseason opener against Minnesota on Friday, Aug. 9, 2019 could establish who has the inside track to take over for retired three-time Pro Bowl center Max Unger. McCoy has gotten most first-team snaps in training camp. But Payton says veteran Nick Easton and young reserve Cameron Tom are also expected to play center this preseason.
