BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP) — Campbell has hired former Carolina Panthers safety Mike Minter as its football coach.

The school announced Tuesday that the former Liberty assistant will replace Dale Steele.

His first game as the Camels' coach comes next fall at Charlotte — the city where Minter set a Panthers record with 954 tackles during a 10-year career that ended in 2007. He spent this season as Liberty's special teams coordinator.

President Jerry Wallace says Minter is passionate about the game and "using his innate leadership abilities to take Campbell's program to the next level."

Steele was fired earlier this month. He went 14-41 in five seasons with the Camels, who relaunched their football program in 2008 after a 50-year hiatus. They closed 2012 with nine straight losses.
